授業の概要と方法
This seminar is designed for reading and understanding Edward W. Said's (d. 2003) Orientalism, an essential book for students of global studies who seek to unravel the fundamental impasses underpinning intercultural misunderstandings, phobias, and hatreds.
In today's world which witnesses remarkable advancements in communication and transportation technologies, cultural borders still exist. Hardly a day goes by without encountering or hearing about new cases of prejudices, stereotypes about others, and cultural phobias such as "Islamophobia" and "Asian Hate." These challenges jeopardize individual lives and social peace in many parts of the world. To secure a more inclusive society, we need to understand each other as we are and remove misunderstandings. This is where the significance of Said's book appears. Although Said's book does not demonstrate how to develop an unbiased understanding of others, it illustrates what should be avoided when depicting the other people and their cultures.
Said's book, by its academically proven arguments, critically examines how depictions of "the Other" (the Oriental culture) can be altered or distorted to glorify "the Self” (the Western culture) by focusing on some themes, interests, and biases prevalent in the literature and academic works of Orientalists—the experts, authors, and scholars in the West who interpreted, defined and depicted the cultures of the Orient (the Middle East, India, Asia and Africa) during the colonial era to produce knowledge for policy makers to control and rule the Orient.
The book will be divided into several parts as to the number of students in the class, and each parts will be assigned to an individual student or a team.
Each individual or team is expected to complete the following four tasks:
(1) Read the entire book on their own.
(2) Deliver a presentation on their assigned section.
(3) Lead a discussion at the end of the presentations.
(4) Write a comment sheet for the content of each week.
*After each presentation, there might be a class evaluation for the individuauls and groups doing presentations, and sometimes a quiz game.
