Course outline
BIS II (ICU) builds on the work of BIS I (ICU) and further deepens the understanding and knowledge acquired in BIS I (ICP), while developing four skills of English language. This course focuses on the present issues to connect global intercultural communication and international society. Students will be able to identify and summarize the key issues of international and intercultural understanding. Students are given opportunities to reflect deeply on issues of international and intercultural understanding to express critically formed opinions in debate and discussion. Course activities may include mini-lectures, debates, group-work, panel discussions, and simulation activities that allow students to understand complex motivations from diverse stakeholders in international society. Formative evaluation is made through class participation such as small quizzes and assignments.

This BIS (Bridge to International Studies) II (RE) is a combination of English Academic Communication skills and the study of Japanese Visual Culture and Manga. As for English academic skills development, it is designed as an introduction to the basic concepts and skills for improving communication between persons from different minority, racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds. As for the contents of the course, it is designed to help students understand key aspects of Japanese visual culture, the historical development and social role of manga and other types of visual narratives in Japan, introducing basic concepts and specialized vocabulary of culture and visual culture.

Method
Students will analyse and evaluate assigned reading for contents, structure, facts and opinions, language use, implied meaning and contradictions, outside the class. Each student is expected to complete reading assignments before class (homework). In class, students will present a summary of their understanding, comparing opposing viewpoints and expressing their own standpoint supported by evidence from the text or other relevant outside sources.
Class activities will include lectures, group discussions on the topic, two presentations based on the project (s) (topics) of your choice, and revisions (quizzes) on basic concepts (definitions) and terms (jargons) pertaining to the study of ‘Japanese visual culture’.

受講生の到達目標

Attainment Objectives
1. Students will understand the academic material and methods from relevant
disciplines and apply them to their own research interests and projects in English.
2. Students will be able to read with a critical thinking attitude that evaluates
content from multiple points of view in English.
3. Students will be able to form a research question, investigate it, and write
coherent texts to report on their findings in English.

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to produce a well-structured essay (approximately 1000+ words), showing evidence of further reading (a list of references-APA style- should be included), to demonstrate not only that they have understood the key concepts discussed in the course but also that they have formed their own opinion, and are able to express it clearly with the support or reasons and examples.
