Course Outline and Method

In this course, we will read a book by Mike Davis, "Planet of Slums" published in 2006, as a textbook.

Students will read the textbook and make a presentation of their assigned chapter of the book. After the presentation, there will be a question and answer session.

All students must read through the textbook. Then, each student will select one or more chapters to be assigned, prepare a handout of the main points, and give a presentation.

In this course, students are expected to discover issues and problems related to urbanization, globalization, and international development, and to actively engage in discussion from diverse knowledge and perspectives.

Student Attainment Objectives

Students will be able to

- read the literature through to the end.
- obtain the necessary information from the literature, summarise it in an appropriate form, and communicate its contents to others.
- prepare an appropriate presentation resume on the contents of the literature.
 - understand and critically discuss the literature.

- understand the problems in urban slums.

Class Format

This lecture is basically conducted face-to-face.

However, in unavoidable cases, such as when the instructor is sick or there is a need to prevent the spread of infectious diseases, the class may be streamed live using the media. In this case, the instructor must be sure to inform the students about the access link in advance using "Course News" in manaba+R.

Recommendations for Private Study

Students are expected to read the assigned chapters for each week.

Students who are in making presentations are required to read the assigned chapters and prepare presentations summarising the chapters.

Students who are not making presentations should read the chapters used in each class in advance and make notes on the contents and questions. In doing so, it is strongly recommended that students seek out and read thoroughly a variety of literature and materials on international development and slums in urban areas that are particularly relevant to the content of the textbook.

The above points are important for writing the final report for this course.
