授業の概要と方法

This course will explore the relationship between human life and natural environment, and how conservation can be achieved with a specific focus on human-wildlife interaction and biodiversity conservation. Human-wildlife conflicts including agricultural and forestry damage by wildlife are big issues in most of rural area in Japan, and also in many area of all over the world. This course covers important elements for understanding human wildlife relationships such as hunting, and overviews international case studies in which people live in harmony with wildlife. The teacher will also explain tools such as facilitation that enable collaboration with other people, and students will practice them in a trial workshop.

After taking this course students will be able to understand
1.how our lives are connected to natural environment,
2.human-wildlife conflicts in Japan and all over the world,
3.key factors and ideas for understanding and solving human-wildlife conflicts; hunting, human dimensions,
and 4.concept of workshops and facilitation for reaching consensus among different stakeholders.

授業実施形態

授業外学習の指示

This course will consist of a combination of lecture and group discussion sessions including role playing and facilitation workshops through the collaborative efforts of all students. Students are expected to read materials assigned for homework. Once in every two or three weeks, students will submit a short report. Also, students need to prepare for the Mid-term exam.
