Course Outline and Method

This course will give a general introduction to constitutional law. Because constitutional law provides the framework of government and its relationship with the individual, adequate knowledge of the basic notions, ideals and functions of constitutional law is recommended, or even demanded, to every student willing to study policy science.

For the sake of explanation, this course will start with the introduction of the constitutional law of Japan and frequently use its various issues and cases. Each student is encouraged to have a comparative perspective and thus find similar issues and cases in the constitutional law of his/her own jurisdiction, considering how it functions and is related to the policies in its political system.

Student Attainment Objectives

Upon completing this course, students should be able to:
- Explain the basic notions of constitutional law;
- Analyze the constitutional practices in each student's home country/jurisdiction, which assists their extended research on the specific fields of public policy in which s/he will engage.
