This seminar is designed for reading and understanding global conflicts and cooperation through the assigned textbook [Understanding Global Conflict and Cooperation: An Introduction to Theory and History (10th Edition)], for students of global studies who seek to understand various traditional and non-traditional security threats in international relations.
The seminar will also explore the concept of soft power in international relations, ranging from pop culture, media, to religion and cultural practices in understanding state diplomacy and peace-building efforts by non-state actors.
The book will be divided into several parts as to the number of students in the class, and each parts will be assigned to an individual student or a team. Each individual or team is expected to complete the following four tasks:
(1) Read the entire book on their own.
(2) Deliver a presentation on their assigned section.
(3) Lead a discussion at the end of the presentations.
(4) Write a comment sheet for the content of each week.
*After each presentation, there might be a class evaluation for the individuauls and groups doing presentations, and sometimes a quiz game.

 The students will be able to
(1) develop a deep understanding of concepts and arguments in the assigned textbook sections.
(2) critically analyze the concept and misconceptions of soft power,
(3) apply core ideas in the book to contemporary examples,
(4) gain skills of presentation, teamwork, discussion.

Classes will be conducted face-to-face, with a few possible exceptions of media-based classes. In the case of media-based classes, students will be informed beforehand.

Class policy on AI usage / academic dishonesty:

1. Students are required to uphold academic honesty in class for all assignments, reports, quizzes, etc.
2. Students’ use of generative AIs, including grammar checkers like Grammarly or translators such as
Google Translate is strictly prohibited. Reports, assignments, or any course-related written work using AI in any measure for text generation, will be treated as plagiarism and graded according to the university rules for plagiarism/academic dishonesty. Additionally, directly copying or using information from electronic tools, or using false information taken directly from generative AI software, such as ChatGPT, will also be treated as academic dishonesty.
3. Students are therefore advised and encouraged to use the Writing Tutorial Program provided by the university and seek help from tutors, rather than relying on AI or software such as for grammar checks.
