授業の概要と方法

This course provides fundamental knowledge on microeconomics with policy applications and implications considered. Some rudimentary mathematics (basic mathematical graphs/diagrams and calculus) will be used. You are required to understand theories by drawing relevant graphs/diagrams. Basically, lectures on essential notions and theories are provided, and some practical sessions follow them. Even in the lectures, you need to answer the questions raised by the tutor. In practical sessions, you need to give answers and ideas to questions in front of other students.

受講生の到達目標

You can:
(1) Understand fundamental theories on microeconomics (e.g. marginal decision rule, efficiency, opportunity cost, price mechanism, elasticity, comparative advantage, and so on);
(2) Apply normative theories to policy analyses in the practical context; and
(3) Explain and discuss real economic phenomena and policies based on microeconomic theories.

Practical questions will be provided. Students are required to answer them, and explain them in front.

Efficiency in Markets: Producer and Consumer Surplus, Efficiency vs. Equity, Market Failure.

Consumer Choice: Utility, Marginal Utility, Marginal Decision Rule, Normal and Inferior Goods, Indifference Curve.

Production and Costs: Short-run Production, Marginal and Average Product, Increasing, Diminishing Returns, Long-run Production.

Competitive Markets: Perfect Competition, Economic Profit.

Practical Session 2

Practical questions will be provided. Students are required to answer them, and explain them in front.

Monopoly: Economies of Scale, Sunk Cost, Marginal Revenue, Deadweight Loss.

Imperfect Competition: Monopolistic Competition, Oligopoly, Collusion, Game Theory.

Practical Session 3

Practical questions will be provided. Students are required to answer them, and explain them in front.

Revision and Final

Revision session will provided shortly, and you need to take the final exam.

授業実施形態

14 classes on Face to Face basis, 1 classes on Media basis (either live-streamed classes or on-demand classes).

授業外学習の指示

You are required to constantly read a relevant textbook according to the classes. Practical questions will be provided as your homework, and you need to prepare them. Homework assignments should be submitted before the due data specified.

You need to answer quizzes in every class on the contents you have learned in the previous classes, and take a final exam in the last class. Logical and thorough answers with relevant graphs/diagrams are highly evaluated. In addition, your class contributions will also be assessed. You will have opportunities to answer questions and discuss related topics in the classes.
