Course Outline and Method

This course will be conducted in English.

The course will explore basic characteristics of Japanese society and culture through reading Japanese literature and/or watching films translated/subtitled in English. Students will be required to participate actively in-class activities. We will look at various social/cultural phenomena and their backgrounds expressed in modern and contemporary Japanese works to consider if there are uniquely Japanese characteristics or not. Students are encouraged as well to discover what is common among other societies/cultures, not peculiar to Japan alone. Through their own choice of literature from their native culture, students will have an opportunity to present some aspects of their own society.

Japanese students who are interested in Japanese society and communicating with international students are also welcome.

Student Attainment Objectives

To have a deeper understanding of Japanese society and culture.
To activate the acquired knowledge by discussing, writing, and making presentations.
To increase the awareness of the connection between society and policy science.
