授業の概要と方法

This course will cover issues pertaining to migration and identity. It will consider connections between migration and social identities such as gender, ethnicity, class and religion. Likewise, it will also examine the relationship between migration and identity politics, and how these play out in practices of migration management and in the wider context of world politics. While much is being said about migration these days, the more intricate aspects of the relationship between migration and identity as well as migration and politics, and how these are experienced by migrants themselves often remain misunderstood, ignored or overlooked. This course provides students with an opportunity to reflect on migration and identity issues from a variety of perspectives and on a variety of scales, thereby also encouraging them to contextualise migration narratives in a wider framework of issues.
Before registering for this course, please carefully note the course evaluation method (explained in the designated section below) and that this course requires substantial amount of reading on complex topics for each class (for details refer to the course schedule section). If you experience difficulties with academic reading and writing on advanced topics in English, it is likely that you will struggle to complete this course.

受講生の到達目標

This course aims to provide students with an overview of issues pertaining to migration and identity from a range of different perspectives. It offers students an opportunity to reflect on different aspects constituting their own identities and backgrounds, and to position these reflections within the wider context, by considering the relationship between migration, identity and politics from various angles. On successful completion of this course students should be able to demonstrate a balanced understanding of the factors shaping this relationship.
